USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) was a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship commissioned on August 16, 1998, and named in honor of the legendary Revolutionary War sloop commanded by John Paul Jones. For more than two decades she served as the flagship of amphibious ready groups in the Pacific Fleet, deploying repeatedly to the Western Pacific and serving as the primary platform for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. Her crew of over 1,200 Sailors kept her ready for everything from combat operations to humanitarian relief. On July 12, 2020, a fire broke out aboard while she was moored in San Diego — burning for four days and causing irreparable damage. She was decommissioned on November 14, 2020. The ship is gone, but the service of every Sailor and Marine who sailed aboard her endures.
