In 1981, USS David R. Ray (DD-971) deployed on her "Malacca Marauder" WestPac cruise — April 21 to November 23, 1981 — with HSL-33 Detachment 9 embarked, visiting Hawaii, the Philippines, Singapore, Diego Garcia, and Australia. In the South China Sea, her crew rescued some 50 Vietnamese refugees at sea.

USS David R. Ray was a Spruance-class destroyer homeported in San Diego whose Cold War service contributed to the U.S. Navy's forward presence and operational readiness.
