USS Donald Cook crest
Commissioned in 1998, the Donald Cook honors Captain Donald G. Cook, a Marine aviator and prisoner of war in Vietnam who died in captivity in 1967 after repeatedly refusing early release and working tirelessly to maintain the morale of his fellow prisoners—earning the Medal of Honor posthumously. In 2014, the Donald Cook gained international attention when Russian Su-24 aircraft made repeated simulated attack runs against her in the Black Sea. Her crew held steady and continued their mission.
