USS Forrest Sherman crest
Commissioned in 2006, the Forrest Sherman honors Admiral Forrest P. Sherman, Chief of Naval Operations from 1949 to 1951, who was one of the principal architects of carrier aviation doctrine and a key figure in defining American naval strategy in the early Cold War. Sherman died in office in Villefranche, France, in 1951—still planning and executing at full speed to the end. The Forrest Sherman is the second Navy ship to carry his name.
