USS Fort McHenry crest

The Fort McHenry is named for the Baltimore fort where, in 1814, the American flag flew through a night of British bombardment and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner. Commissioned in 1987, she served the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets as an amphibious dock landing ship, transporting and landing Marines in the most demanding environments. Her name speaks of endurance under fire, and her crew lived up to it in every deployment.
