USS George Philip

Commissioned in 1980, the George Philip honors Captain George Philip, commanding officer of USS Laffey at Okinawa in April 1945—who kept his ship fighting through a catastrophic kamikaze assault involving 22 attacking aircraft in under an hour, one of the most intense attacks any surface combatant survived in World War II. Philip's leadership under fire saved his ship and most of his crew. The George Philip served the Pacific Fleet until her decommissioning in 1996.
