(SSN-772)
USS Greeneville
Commissioned in 1996, the Greeneville is an improved 688i Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine named for the Tennessee city in the hills of East Tennessee. On February 9, 2001, she became the subject of national attention when a rapid surfacing exercise resulted in a collision with the Japanese fishing vessel Ehime Maru, killing nine aboard. Her crew has carried the weight of that day ever since; the Greeneville continued to serve until her decommissioning in 2012.
