Commissioned in 1987, the Helena is a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine named for Montana's capital city in the Rocky Mountains. There is something characteristically American about a landlocked mountain city sending its name into the depths of the Pacific—and the Helena carried it faithfully before her decommissioning in 2002.
