Commissioned in 2001, the Lassen honors Clyde Everett Lassen, a Navy helicopter pilot who in June 1968 flew into North Vietnam under enemy fire, navigating a burning and nearly uncontrollable aircraft through darkness to rescue two downed airmen in one of the most extraordinary helicopter missions of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for the mission. The Lassen serves the Pacific Fleet.
