Commissioned in 2002, the McCampbell honors Captain David McCampbell, the Navy's all-time top ace with 34 aerial victories in World War II—including a single October 1944 mission where he shot down nine Japanese aircraft in a battle where he and his wingman faced more than 60 enemy planes. McCampbell was awarded the Medal of Honor and is the most accomplished fighter pilot in U.S. naval history. The McCampbell is forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
