USS Michigan crest
Commissioned in 1982 as SSBN-727 and converted to a cruise missile submarine (SSGN) in 2004, the Michigan now carries up to 154 Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles and deploys special operations forces on sensitive missions—exchanging strategic deterrence for conventional precision strike at a scale no previous submarine could match. Named for the Great Lakes State, she is forward-deployed to Guam, projecting power across the Western Pacific.
