USS Mitscher

Commissioned in 1994, the Mitscher honors Admiral Marc A. 'Pete' Mitscher, who commanded Task Force 58—the most powerful carrier striking force ever assembled—across the Central Pacific in 1944 and 1945. His order to turn on the flight deck lights to guide his pilots home at night, exposing his fleet to possible submarine attack, became one of the defining acts of naval leadership in American history. The Mitscher serves the Atlantic Fleet.
