Commissioned in 2004, the Momsen honors Vice Admiral Charles B. 'Swede' Momsen, the Navy's most celebrated submarine rescue pioneer—inventor of the Momsen Lung escape device, supervisor of the 1939 Squalus rescue, and later a destroyer squadron commander who pioneered wolf-pack tactics against Japanese shipping. Momsen was the kind of officer who refused to accept that a problem had no solution. The Momsen serves the Pacific Fleet.
