Commissioned in 1964, the Sacramento is the lead ship of the Sacramento class of fast combat support ships—designed to replenish carrier battle groups at high speed underway, carrying fuel, ammunition, and stores. The largest and fastest replenishment ship in the world at her commissioning, she was a logistical revolution that enabled carrier battle groups to remain at sea and at full combat power indefinitely. She was decommissioned in 1994 after 30 years of fleet service.
