USS Sampson crest
Commissioned in 2007, the Sampson honors Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, who commanded the American naval squadron at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba in July 1898—the engagement that destroyed Spain's Caribbean fleet in a matter of hours and effectively ended the Spanish-American War. The battle was decisive, overwhelming, and cost the Navy a single sailor. The Sampson serves the Pacific Fleet.
