USS Saratoga (CV-60) was the second ship of the Forrestal class — the U.S. Navy's first true supercarriers, designed from the keel up to operate jet aircraft. Commissioned April 14, 1956 at the New York Naval Shipyard, "Super Sara" entered service with the angled flight deck, steam catapults, and mirror landing system that defined the modern carrier era. Across thirty-eight years of service she logged six Mediterranean deployments before her Vietnam combat tours, took part in the 1986 Libya strikes (Operation El Dorado Canyon), and served as the on-station carrier in the Red Sea for the duration of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, where she launched the first carrier strikes of the Gulf War. Homeported at Mayport, Florida for most of her career, she was decommissioned August 20, 1994.
