USS Somerset crest

The Somerset, commissioned in 2014, is named for Somerset County, Pennsylvania—where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001, after passengers stormed the cockpit and prevented terrorists from reaching their target. A piece of the crash site is embedded in her keel. She carries the courage of those passengers with her in every deployment, a ship named for sacrifice and built for strength. Her crew knows exactly what the name means.
