USS Spruance

Commissioned in 2011, the Spruance honors Admiral Raymond A. Spruance, the quiet and methodical commander who led the American carrier force at Midway in June 1942—one of the most consequential naval battles in history—and later drove the Fifth Fleet across the Central Pacific to the doorstep of Japan. Where Halsey was theatrical, Spruance was precise; where others sought glory, he sought results. He got them, every time. The Spruance is homeported in San Diego.
