USS The Sullivans crest
Commissioned in 1997, the The Sullivans honors the five Sullivan brothers—George, Francis, Joseph, Madison, and Albert—who enlisted together, served together aboard USS Juneau, and were killed together when she was torpedoed at Guadalcanal in November 1942. Their story prompted the War Department's Sole Survivor Policy to prevent such tragedies from claiming entire families. Five brothers. One ship. The The Sullivans carries a grief and a pride that the Navy has never forgotten.
