USS Vandergrift

Commissioned in 1984, the Vandegrift honors General Alexander A. Vandegrift, USMC, who commanded the First Marine Division at Guadalcanal in 1942 and led the Marines through one of the most brutal and decisive campaigns of the Pacific War—earning the Medal of Honor for his leadership during the desperate early months of the fight. The Vandegrift served the Pacific Fleet until her transfer to Thailand in 2012.
