USS West Virginia crest
Commissioned in 1990, the West Virginia is an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine named for the Mountain State. The original USS West Virginia was a battleship sunk at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, salvaged, repaired, and returned to fire her guns at Okinawa—a story of recovery and return the state of West Virginia has always understood. Her submarine namesake carries 24 Trident II D5 missiles and continues to serve as part of America's nuclear deterrent.
