Commissioned in 2001, the Winston S. Churchill honors Sir Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister whose partnership with Franklin Roosevelt forged the Anglo-American alliance that defeated the Axis powers. Uniquely among U.S. Navy warships, the Churchill carries a Royal Navy officer as a permanent member of her crew—a living symbol of the special relationship between the two navies. She is the only American warship with this distinction, and she wears it well.
