USS Antrim crest
Commissioned in 1981, the Antrim honors Commander Richard Nott Antrim, who survived the Bataan Death March and earned the Medal of Honor as a prisoner of war by stepping between a Japanese officer and a fellow prisoner being beaten to death—an act of courage that cost him dearly and saved another man's life. His name on a Navy ship honors the principle that you don't leave your own behind. The Antrim served the Atlantic Fleet until her decommissioning in 1996.
