USS Barney crest
The Barney, a Charles F. Adams-class destroyer commissioned in 1962, honored Commodore Joshua Barney, one of the most colorful naval officers of the Revolution and the War of 1812—a privateer, a Continental Navy captain, and the man who led the flotilla that fought the British advance on Washington in 1814, fighting until captured at Bladensburg. She served the Atlantic Fleet for nearly two decades, representing a class that bridged the gap between the guns of World War II and the guided missiles of the modern Navy.
