USS Doyle crest
Commissioned in 1983, the Doyle honors Vice Admiral James H. Doyle, the amphibious warfare specialist who planned and executed the Inchon landing in September 1950—one of the most audacious and decisive amphibious operations in military history. General MacArthur called the landing brilliant; Doyle planned every ship movement and every boat wave of it. The Doyle served the Atlantic Fleet until her decommissioning in 2000.
