(FFG-40)
USS Halyburton
Commissioned in 1984, the Halyburton honors Pharmacist's Mate Second Class William David Halyburton, who died at Okinawa in May 1945 after repeatedly braving enemy fire to treat wounded Marines—finally shielding a critically wounded Marine with his own body when the enemy renewed their assault. His Medal of Honor was earned in a moment of pure selfless choice. The Halyburton served the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets until her decommissioning in 2011.
