USS Howard

Commissioned in 2001, the Howard honors Sergeant Jimmy Howard, USMC, who held a hilltop against a night assault by a much larger North Vietnamese force in June 1966—wounded himself, he moved from position to position under fire throughout the night, organized his Marines, and kept them fighting until reinforcements arrived. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership and courage. The Howard serves the Pacific Fleet.
