USS Intrepid crest

The "Fighting I" survived five kamikaze strikes and a torpedo hit in World War II, earning the nickname that stuck for the rest of her career. After the war she served as an antisubmarine carrier, recovering astronaut capsules from the Mercury and Gemini programs. She is now the celebrated Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City—the ship that refused to die, standing as one of the most visited naval museums in the world. A true survivor.
