USS Los Angeles crest
Commissioned in 1976, the Los Angeles is the name ship of the most numerous class of nuclear attack submarines ever built—62 boats that formed the backbone of America's Cold War undersea fleet for four decades. Designed to hunt Soviet submarines in the deep Atlantic, the Los Angeles set the standard for American fast-attack performance that her successors built upon ever since. Decommissioned in 2010, she left a legacy carried forward by every boat that bore her design.
