USS Louisville crest
Commissioned in 1986, the Louisville is a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine named for Kentucky's largest city on the Ohio River. The Louisville earned a permanent place in naval history on January 17, 1991, when she fired the first Tomahawk cruise missiles of Operation Desert Storm—the opening shots of the air war against Iraq. She was decommissioned in 2004, her place in the history books assured.
