USS Reuben James crest
Commissioned in 1986, the Reuben James honors Boatswain's Mate Reuben James, who in 1804 placed himself between Decatur and a Turkish saber aimed at the lieutenant's head, taking the blow himself—an act that gave him his own legend. The name has adorned American warships since 1920, including the first U.S. Navy ship sunk by enemy action in World War II. The Reuben James served the Pacific Fleet until her decommissioning in 2013.
