USS San Francisco crest
Commissioned in 1981, the San Francisco is a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine that became the most famous collision survivor in modern submarine history. On January 8, 2005, running at high speed deep in the Pacific, she struck an uncharted seamount—killing one sailor, injuring 98, and crushing her bow. Her crew's extraordinary seamanship kept her afloat and brought her home under her own power across 350 miles of open ocean. Decommissioned in 2017, she is a legend in the submarine force.
