USS Scranton crest
Commissioned in 1991, the Scranton is an improved 688i Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine named for the Pennsylvania coal city in the Lackawanna Valley. Scranton's working-class heritage—built on anthracite coal and industrial labor—echoes in the submarine force's own culture of hard work, professionalism, and keeping the boat running under pressure. The Scranton continues to serve the Atlantic Fleet.
