USS Simpson

Commissioned in 1985, the Simpson is an Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate notable for firing a Standard Missile at an Iranian F-4 Phantom during Operation Praying Mantis in April 1988—one of the last times a U.S. Navy surface combatant fired a missile in anger. A Cold War veteran with a story worth remembering, the Simpson served the Atlantic Fleet until her decommissioning in 2015, among the very last Perry-class frigates to leave the fleet.
