USS Vincennes

The Vincennes, commissioned in 1985, served in the Atlantic Fleet and deployed to the Persian Gulf during the 1987–1988 Tanker War—an era of high tension and ambiguity in a hostile environment. On July 3, 1988, during a confrontation with Iranian gunboats, her crew mistakenly engaged Iran Air Flight 655, a tragedy that claimed 290 lives and cast a long shadow over her service. Decommissioned in 2005, her history is a reminder of the irreversible weight of split-second decisions in combat conditions.
