Commissioned in 1999, the O'Kane honors Rear Admiral Richard H. 'Dick' O'Kane, the Navy's all-time top-scoring submarine commander who sank 31 ships during World War II before being captured when one of his own malfunctioning torpedoes circled back and sank USS Tang. O'Kane survived captivity and was awarded the Medal of Honor. The O'Kane serves the Pacific Fleet, patrolling oceans where her namesake once hunted beneath the surface.
