(SSN-720)
USS Pittsburgh
Commissioned in 1985, the Pittsburgh is a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine named for the Pennsylvania steel city where three rivers meet. The Pittsburgh fired Tomahawk cruise missiles during Operation Desert Storm in January 1991, one of the first submarines to strike targets in Iraq. A city that supplied the steel that won World War II now has a submarine that fired the opening shots of another war to its name. She was decommissioned in 2004.
